Key Coaching Achievements
Asian Rowing Cup II, 2016 – Singapore
The Asian Rowing Cup II held in Singapore in 2016 marked a historic moment for Indian school-level rowing, as it was the first time an Indian school team participated internationally. Shakil Ahmed, along with Priya Mukherjee, played a pivotal role as coaches, preparing a team of students from La Martiniere School who had earlier triumphed at the All India Inter School Regatta. Under Shakil’s meticulous coaching and the support of Bengal Water Sports Management, the team not only competed but excelled, with the Indian Boys’ Four winning the Gold medal, beating strong contenders from Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The event also saw notable performances by Indian girls’ teams and even a gold-winning performance by the Asian Coaches Team, represented by Shakil and Priya, in a coxed eights event—defeating iconic teams like Oxford and Cambridge. This success not only boosted India’s profile in international rowing but also opened up global opportunities for young rowers under Shakil’s mentorship.

World Dragon Boat Championship, 2023 – Pattaya, Thailand
In the 16th World Dragon Boat Championship held in Pattaya, Thailand in 2023, Shakil Ahmed again demonstrated his outstanding coaching calibre by leading the Bengal Para Boys within the Indian contingent to an exceptional performance on the world stage. Competing against participants from 63 countries, the Indian team emerged with a commendable four-medal haul – 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze. This achievement not only highlighted the technical strength and mental fortitude of the athletes but also underscored the quality of coaching and leadership provided by Shakil. His ability to guide para-athletes to victory in such a competitive international field reflects both his inclusive approach to sports and his dedication to athlete development across all levels of ability. This milestone added another distinguished chapter to his coaching legacy in Indian water sports.

14th Dragon Boat Regatta, Pattaya

Spotting their potential amidst adversity, Ahmed took them under his wing, training them with discipline, purpose, and belief. At the 14th Dragon Boat Regatta held in Kolkata, the duo not only competed with seasoned rowers but left a mark with their sheer determination and teamwork.
